Berlusconi expected in court for fraud hearing

Berlusconi is expected in court on Monday. The trial is one of a set of tax fraud cases related to Burlusconi's media empire. Berlusconi, his son, and others are accused of fraud and embezzlement over television rights that were acquired at inflated prices through front companies. In other trials of his he attacked the judges as leftist magistrates who are bent on bringing down the government and he has vowed to curb their powers. The proposed reforms would shorten the statute of limitations on some cases and impose tighter disciplinary measures on magistrates. Critics say that they are mainly to help him avoid trial.
