Suzanne Mubarak, the wife of deposed Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, has been arrested in Cairo over allegations that she profitted from her position in the former regime. Mrs. Mubarak's husband is already arrested though in a hospital after a heart attack, and her two sons are already in jail. The author claims this is the natural continuation of arrests being made in Egypt by prosecutors being pushed by popular sentiment for a wide government cleanup after the protests and overthrow. Although the detention time has been limited to only fifteen days in Egypt, that time can be repeatedly renewed, which has occurred for Mr. Mubarak and his sons, and will likely happen to his wife despite the fact that none of them have been actually charged with anything. In Egypt such a long detention time would signal serious charges, but the author is unsure as to whether or not Mrs. Mubarak will be charged or merely pumped for information. She was known for her good works, supporting charities, organized conferences for women's issues, campaigned against female genitalia mutilation, and supported the Arab world's version of Sesame Street. However, she was also known for her powerful position in Mubarak's regime, and worked to push her son towards inheriting the presidency from his father.
