On Wednesday, Spain was hit by a 5.1-magnitude earthquake, the worst in 30 years, causing 9 deaths and over 300 injuries. The epicenter and hardest-hit city was Lorca, a town in the Murcia region of southeast Spain. Rubble filled the streets and covered cars, the bell tower of an old church collapsed, and 80% of the homes in the town were damaged, prompting thousands of residents to spend the night outside as a precaution. 8,000 mayors across Spain, who are currently campaigning for the upcoming May 22 elections, took a day off of the campaign trail on Thursday in honor of the quake victims.
