President Hassan Rouhani of Iran on Wednesday criticized the recent arrests of journalists and others by the Revolutionary Guard Corps.   They have accused the journalists of being part of plots hatched by the United States against Iran and its culture.  Rouhani’s reaction signaled a deepening divide between his administration and hard line adversaries over Iran’s future relationship with the United States.  Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, has declared that despite the nuclear deal, the United States remains Iran’s main enemy and cannot be trusted.  This anti-American backlash that has been gaining momentum in Iran since the nuclear agreement was reached in July is causing riots and protesters to take the streets.  The Committee to Protect Journalists is a group based in New York, switched their attention to the issue on Wednesday over the crackdown on journalists resulting in the arrests of at least five local journalists.
