Obama's Trans-Pacific Partnership Might Stir Up Your Dinner

Only about 2 percent of the food imported to the U.S. is inspected. Obama's trade deal will welcome more food imports, which means more food products, which means more food that is not inspected. Food safety is unlikely to change despite this new trade deal.

However, the agreement does set up protocol for participating countries to decide on their own product safety when it comes to GMOS, since product safety is different in every country. The TPP also establish a working group for this topic.

Canada and New Zealand has opened the market to American milk, and in turn the U.S. has opened their market to New Zealand milk.

The TPP will pave the way for the growth American pork exports, especially since the American pork industry has already been booming. However, the U.S. imports a significant amount of pork in addition to their significant amount of exports. Tariff reductions on imports may make foreign pork cheaper but it will threaten the livelihood of hog farmers here.

In addition to the changes made to the dairy and pork industry, this new deal will also affect the beef and alcohol industry, as well as organic products and junk food products, in terms of labeling.
