Taiwan and China: friends, foes or fr-enemies
For the first time ever since 1949 the Chinese and Taiwan presidents are
to meet each other in a summit that is to take place this Saturday in Singapore
Both the states have a history of long standing sour relations. Taiwan gained
its independence in 1911 after the fall of china’s last dynasty and was ruled
by the same government as that of mainland chain until 1949 when communists
took over the mainland china. It was to Taiwan where the nationalist Chinese government
fled in 1949 after the communist party took over mainland chain. Although both Taiwan
and china now have separate sovereign governments that rule the island of Taiwan
(also called republic of china) and the mainland china (peoples republic of
china) respectively; anyhow both of them refuse to acknowledge the others
authenticity. It was not until 1990’s that the two agreed to cooperate when representatives
from both the country met in Singapore and after that meeting both the
countries opened doors to each other for trade and tourism.
This meeting for sure is an
important one; Major counties including United States are looking forward to
the happenings of this meeting. Any how the current president of Taiwan who is
from the nationalist party is criticized by the opposition democratic
progressive party DPP that it is an attempt to increase it electoral pool as
elections in Taiwan are coming near.
