The UN Human Rights Committee is pushing for the Philippines to decriminalize abortion, legalize divorce, and to pass an anti-discrimination law. The committee recognizes the fact that there is an international treaty on civil and political rights. Trying to enforce certain rights in states around the world can be extremely difficult, especially since people and states around the world may have different views. However, it is bizarre that these human rights are still being criminalized in the Philippines and must become decriminalized. Besides Vatican, the Philippines is the only state in the world where divorce is not an option. “The lack of legislation providing for divorce may compel victims of domestic violence to remain in violent relationships,” the UN rights body said.
