Island Grabbing in Asia
The borders of countries in south and east Asia have
become more entangled and complicated as each country claims their right over
islands, atolls, and shoals. As the world economy expands and new sources of
energy and oil are needed claims to the small islands and atolls that are
believed to have huge deposits of oil and natural gas increase. Using
patriotism and the inherent right to claim what is rightfully theirs, citizens
of countries involved increase their protest over countries that have
physically made their presence in the disputed islands. China has continued to
assert its power over other Asian countries. The United States through Hillary
Clinton stated that “countries in conflict to settle maritime territorial
disputes in the South China Sea must be resolved multilaterally and in
accordance with international law.”
