A poll published by Corriere della Sera, one of Italy's oldest and largest daily newspapers, reported that only 36% of Italians plan to vote for a traditional political party. National elections take place in April 2013. The current Prime Minister Mario Monte has said that he is not planning on running again and plans to return to academics. Investors worry about who will follow the current government and fear that a new government could ruin the reforms that Monte's government has put in place. Since taking control of the government Monte has launched an austerity program and is dealing with a deep recession. Austerity, the recession, and unemployment have led voters to support protest groups more as the traditional parties are seen as corrupt, privileged, and wasteful due to various and repeated scandals.
