This article talks about the war going on in Syria and how the violence has slowed. The government there is clearly winning the military battles and the nation's president is feeling confident enough in his impending victory to send this message. Winning the hearts and minds of the people, however, seems to be a bit harder than taking out the last few insurgent strongholds. The country lays in ruins and is riddled widespread hunger and poverty. Not to mention the country is still fiercely divided politically. I think this story is important to our class because even though the conflict in Syria has been around for a few years it still affects global politics. Also, the article stressed that their may be peace now, but tensions are still high and rampant violence could strike again in the near future. Additionally, this is relevant because the entire time the war has been going on, the debate over whether the U.S. should get involved has been centered over human rights violations and if it is our moral duty as self proclaimed protectors of the free world to act. The issues brought up in the debate are closely tied with the term, "liberalism" which is something we just went over. The article brings up some interesting observations on this the current state of the conflict in that part of the world.
