A wildfire in the city of
Valparaiso Chile has gotten out of control and killed at the least 7 people.
The fire has also destroyed about 500 homes. It has been reported that the
fires started sometime in the afternoon on Saturday at the edge of the city and
spread rapidly due to high winds. Thousands of residents have been evacuated along
with many inmates from a prison. The
regional governor Ricardo Bravo explained, “This is the worst disaster I have seen;
now we fear that the fire will spread to the center of the city, which would
increase the severity of the emergency."
On Sunday their president declared the city a catastrophe zone and has
put the Chile military in charge of maintaining order throughout the chaotic
event.
