On Monday, April 7,
India’s elections began in the most remote northeastern corner of the country.
The elections are for selecting 543 members of the lower house of Parliament.
There were estimated 8,000 polling stations opened in 6 different districts. This
is the world’s largest democratic election, with 814 million eligible voters
throughout India. The election will consist of nine-phases across India that
will last until May 16. Since there is widespread social change,
this election is seen as a historic one. Opinion polls show that voters are
leaning toward the B.J.P. Voters are for the first time, mobilizing on social
media and demographics include rural and young voters. As the article states,
voters are “harnessing a popular demand for change”.
