Recent
news reports U.N. Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, has requested that Syria not
hold elections on their already agreed upon date of June 3rd. His
reasoning for doing so lies within the current state of Syria, Stephane Dujarric,
one of Ban’s spokesmen said to reporters that such elections "will damage
the political process and hamper the prospects for political solution,”. It is
Ban’s thoughts that elections will not bring about any change for a country
going through a civil war.
There are mixed feelings about the
postponing of the election. Some support the current power (Bashar al-Assad)
and others would like him to be replaced as soon as possible. The pro-Assad
side believes the government is fighting terrorist groups that are attacking in
attempts to destabilize the country. The con-Assad group however, goes to the
numbers of causalities for back up.
During Syria’s three year civil war an estimate 100,000 plus, people
have been killed. It is said that 107 people (including 20 children) were killed
just this past Monday alone.
