Brazil’s President-Elect Promises Prosperity but Faces Economic Perils

Samantha Pearson and Luciana Magalhaes reporters from the "Wall Street Journal" wrote an article on October 31 of this year called "Brazil’s President-Elect Promises Prosperity but Faces Economic Perils." In this article, the reporters talk about how Lula Da Silva won back the presidency and how he promised prosperity but faces economic difficulties. Brazil's new president promised his supporters a better life, but he will struggle to deliver those promises with the current economic climate the world is passing through. When Mr. Lula Da Silva first took the office in 2003 the situation was totally different since the country was growing rapidly, China was consuming everything Brazil had as natural resources, the state scoffers were full, the government was paying its debts early to the FMI and the government had the money for social spending. Now the situation is totally different because Brazil's economy is going to grow by 2.6% this year and next year by only 0.6% and Brazil's debt is now hovering at about 80%. Finally, Lula promised the poor to increase the minimum wage and pardoned some debt to increase consumption at the cost of increasing spending in an economic downturn to support the poor and increased his rating at the expense of the country's fiscal health.

Brutal Storms Hit the Philippines

Over 100 people are dead and dozens more missing after one of the most destructive storms of the year hits the Philippines. Most people died in flash floods and mudslides. At least 53 of the 105 people dead are from the Maguindanao province in a majority Muslim region. The unusually heavy rains were brought on by the tropical storm Nalgae, which blew into the South China Sea on Sunday (Oct. 30, 2022), but left destruction in its wake. Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva

Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva has been elected to be the next President of Brazil. And this win was also a huge comeback for Lula da Silva and Brazil now may see more left views after the 4 year span of far-right views from the president before. The Main issue that he will have to face are the lasting impacts of the covid-19 virus. An estimated 9.6 million people fell below the poverty line during this time. He will also face large environmental issues like deforestation.

Explosions near Somalia

In this article, they talked about two car bomb that occurred on October 29th 2022. These two bombs killed up to 100 people and injured more than 300 people.  Although this group has claimed this bombing like they have done before, the suspected bombers seem to be a terror group from Somalia called  al-Shabaab. The explosions were next to an education ministry.  In recent times similar attacks have happened before, killing even more members of this community.  Something I found very sad when reading this article was the fact that a mother of 6 tried to help the victims of the blast and ended up getting killed by the second blast. People tried to stop her but being a selfless person, she went back.

Could America Win a New World War?

In the article, Could America Win a New World War, it talks about how America is ill equipped to fight in a two front war. The united states has given much of their weapon stockpile to Ukraine in assistance of their defensive war effort against Russia. The article went into how the U.S does not have the means to produce these weapons due to it being nearly twenty years since they were produced. The speculation of the article is that if China is to invade Taiwan then the U.S would be at war with China and China having close ideals, similar to Russia then the U.S would be caught in a two front war. There is a real realist outlook in this article. The article suggests that America would be wise to join with their allies to resupply their weapons stockpile. The fear of nuclear war from China and Russia and America would destroy the world. A world war as of right now would not be good for America due to the fact that the U.S is under prepared. It will be tense to keep up with the global news and see what the global players will do.

Brazil’s Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva Wins Presidential Election, Beating Jair Bolsonaro

In Brazil, former president Luis Inacio da Silva or Lula has won over Bolsonaro with 50.9 percent of the vote compared to Bolsonaro's 49.1. It will be Lula's third time in office and marks a major turning point for Brazil. Under his presidency from 2003-2010, Lula worked to improve the lives of Brazilians and lifted 25 million out of poverty with his policies. However, he had been accused of corruption just a few years ago in a large scandal where his party stole about 2-13 million dollars from the Brazilian economy in the 'lava jato scandal. Nonetheless, he has been elected and now his task will be to unite Brazil which has become very divided politically and to address critical problems. So far Bolsonaro has not openly contested the results of the election but if he does, this could further escalate tension in Brazil. Bolsonaro is the first president to fail to win re-election according to the article in Brazil, in over 25 years. With his win, Lula looks committed to re-establish his credibility and return Brazil to the good days of his presidency in the early 2000's when many Brazilians benefitted. Lula in his two previous terms brought electricity and water to places that were previously off the grid. Exports of soybeans, oranges, and sugar to China also hit record highs during that time. Lula's policies of state scholarships allowed many to afford top level schooling. Now however, Brazil is growing at a much slower rate and there is division within the country. Already there are videos of Bolsonaro supporters despairing and wishing for the army to 'save the election'. I hope that Lula manages to unify a divided country and sets a good precedent for Latin America and the world.

What We Know and Still Don’t Know About the Attack on Paul Pelosi

Earlier this week, an intruder broke into Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi's home, and attacked her husband. Paul Pelosi was attacked with a hammer to the head and hand and luckily was able to call 911 before things escalated. The intruder, who upon further investigation appears to belong to the opposing political party and was looking for Nancy Pelosi, was taken into custody and Mr. Pelosi to the hospital where he is expected to make a full recovery.

At least 153 killed in crowd crush during Halloween festivities in Seoul

In Seoul, South Korea over 150 people died as a result of a stampede during Halloween festivities. This is the first Halloween weekend in three years that hasn't had Covid restrictions so there was a crowd of over 100,000 people in the nightlife area. A large number of people crowded a narrow alleyway which caused these tragedies to occur. The President has declared a state of official mourning. I hope there are precautions put in place so future events don't end as badly as this one.

Russia and Ukraine grain conflict

Russia has just stepped out of a grain deal with Ukraine that has started to stir up worry and confusion. Some believe that this could result in a global food shortage. Joe Biden has reportedly stepped in and made comments on the matter. Russia is not allowing trucks carrying grain into Ukraine, and the president of the United States has decided to step in. Biden says that what Russia is doing is outrageous and that Russia is breaking deals that the U.N. had previously negotiated. Russian officials stated that they acted in this way to retaliate against the alleged drone attack Saturday against Russia’s Black Sea Fleet ships off the Crimean coast. Ukraine has denied these attacks, suggesting that Russia is lying to make its actions seem like retaliation instead of initiating attacks. These events are gaining worldwide acknowledgment, and Russia is stated to be facing international condemnation.

This week, in Mumbai, India, a suspension bridge collapsed.  At least 60 people fell into the Machchu river, where they were killed.  According to the NPR source, “hundreds more might be trapped underneath the rubble” (Kumar).  While rescue operations are still happening, Modi, the private company in charge of the bridge’s upkeep, has announced monetary compensation to families of those who died in the accident.  From an international perspective, I wondered how other actors would have reacted to an event like this occurring in their country—how would their actions differ from those of India?

Russia to ban sharing LGBT 'propaganda' with adults as well as children

If enacted, the law would toughen the already existing regulations that criminalize LGBT education when it comes to children. The ban would allow censorship and block LGBT issues on the internet, in advertising and in books, among other things. Human rights activists say the extension means that any act or public mention of same-sex couples would face fines or even expulsion from the country for non-Russians. It is supposed to be part of a "hybrid war" against Western values.

The Incident took place in the Itaewon neighborhood Saturday night. The cause of these deaths was a fire outbreak. Several reports were received that some of these casualties were 'buried' in crows. However, there has been no evidence of gas leaks or power outages. Dozens of people were injured. these people were transferred to multiple hospitals. Festivities can be a time for communities to bond together. However, incidents like these in crowds are common these days. It is more than essential to stay safe and sound during festivals. The casualties of this incident were really unfortunate.

Russian Fossil Fuels

Russia is the largest exporter of fossil fuels; with the war more and more countries are starting to shun Russia as an exporter. This isn't good for Russian economy and their economy has fallen to the lowest that it has been recently. The demand for the fossil fuels is predicted to peak in 2025, as the demand keeps going up and up so does the investment and commitment to green energy which is said to rise by 50% by the year 2030. The world has been turning more and more to green energy, the worry is that this crisis and possible shortage makes people worry it could undo what has already been done. Sanctions on Russia's gas and oil is rising which is making threating nations such as Germany and France with a shortage this winter.

Putin watches first Russian nuclear drill since invasion of Ukraine

Russia is testing out its nuclear missiles; an ICBM was launched from the Kura test site to land in the far east of Russia. This is a show of force to create fear in Ukraine. Putin is also trying to show that he is serious about using Nukes to gain an advantage in the war. Russia is trying to make the world believe that Ukraine will use a dirty bomb, and in return, they will have a justifiable reason to nuke them. Russia is trying to shape public opinion and deceive them about what's happening. I honestly think that at this point may use a nuke bomb on their own troops to find a reason to Nuke Ukraine and win the war. The action of testing itself was okay under the start arms treaty.

Biden targets Nicaragua’s gold in new move against Ortega

President Biden has threatened a ban on American involvement in the Nicaraguan gold industry in the most recent attempt to place sanctions on authoritarian leader Daniel Ortega. This comes after many previous sanctions by the US on the country for attacks against human rights and support of Russia. Ortega also recently spoke out against the US when congratulating Xi Jinping on his next term as leader of  China. The ban is also likely to increase migration as Nicaraguans continue to leave their homeland in large numbers.

Sucks to Suck: Brittney Griner Still Remains in Russian Custody After Deliberate Attempt to Smuggle Drugs into Russian Territory - Megan Lemley

The story of Brittney Griner has been a large topic of debate since she was arrested in February for attempting to bring illegal narcotics, or hashish oil in the form of a cartridge or vape, with her as she arrived in Russia to play basketball (Griner plays for the Phoenix Mercury WNBA team in the U.S.). While there are some discrepancies about the severity of her punishment, there is one thing that is for certain: there is no escaping the just over eight years left that she has to serve in Russia. Griner made an attempt to lessen that sentence in an appeal that she made a week ago today, which was quickly shut down by the Russian court.

This article also talks about a high-profile prisoner swap being Griner's best chance. However, it would be in poor taste to swap Ms. Griner for a Russian native that goes by the name "Merchant of Death." This man is a known arms dealer "who is serving a 25-year prison sentence for conspiring to sell weapons to people who said they plan to kill Americans." While no American wants to be imprisoned in Russia, especially a high profile basketball player, one should consider their actions and decisions more carefully when entering a country that harbors somebody like Edward Snowden from the American government.

Iran Charges Hundreds Accused of Joining Protests

David S. Cloud a reporter from the "Wall Street Journal" wrote an article on October 24 of this year called " Iran Charges Hundreds Accused of Joining Protests." In this article, the reporter talks about how the Iranian authorities have announced charges against thousands of Iranians in connection with the protest that has swept Iran these past weeks. Since the start of the protest, the government has detained an unknown number of people making the prisons overcrowded, and recently 1,700 people have been released from jail. The protest were sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini who was detained for allegedly violating the country's strict dress code for women.  The protest has continued in different cities in Iran and in universities reaching the point of school administrators searching for students who might be connected with the demonstration. Finally, the government is continuing to arrest people and charge them with allegations that go from collaborating with foreign governments to the death penalty.

Russia's 'dirty bomb'

The Russian military is trying to convince the world that it has readied its forces for the possible use of a dirty bomb by Ukraine, but that claim has been rejected by US and NATO. Russia is trying other ways of deception to advance on Ukraine before winter is here, so it makes sense why they would claim such a thing. I think that Moscow is also trying to find an excuse for using Chemical/ Nuclear weapons on Ukraine so they have to make the world belief that Ukriane is the one who started it.

What does the new government means for the war in Ukraine.

The article, first talks about how Giorgia Meloni was sworn into office this Saturday and is also Italy's first prime minister. She will make a very hard right government that has not been seen in Italy in a long time. The new governing coalition includes Matteo Salvini and Silvio Berlusconi who have similar views as Meloni. In the past, both men have publicly shown approval of Vladimir Putin, which made many people curious about Italy's stance on the war in Ukraine will be. Meloni has said that Italy is a part of the Atlantic Alliance and a part of Europe and will share the same stance as them. But regardless of what the prime minister has said, many still worry about what the right government means for the country.

US official says Russia’s purported fears of Ukraine using a dirty bomb are ‘transparently false’

In the article, US official says Russia’s purported fears of Ukraine using a dirty bomb are ‘transparently false’, the author discusses how Russia claims that Ukraine is going to use a dirty bomb on their own land. A dirty bomb is a bomb with nuclear material, such as waste products from nuclear energy, in it to leave residual damage to the intended target. Dirty bombs are largely used by terrorists. The claim that Ukraine will use such a weapon are unfounded and a ploy to gain reason for their continuous war against Ukraine. Nuclear weapons are a genuine worry in the possession of larger countries. However, with larger nuclear weapons there needs to be prep and a place to launch from. With a dirty bomb it can be a simple small terrorist attack that can do a lot of damage and leave an impact. The claims are unfounded but it is interesting to see Russia push the fear that Ukraine would use a terrorist tactic to fight. Russia is trying to compare Ukraine to a terrorist state. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future and what is said.

Russia strikes Ukrainian energy grid

The war between Russia and Ukraine continues to intensify as Russia has attacked essential proponents of Ukraine’s energy grid. The attack is reported to be significant in scale, as areas that spread all across the entire country. It has been estimated that approximately one-third of Ukraine’s energy supplies were destroyed or damaged, and the attack led to over 1.5 million Ukrainian households being without power. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky proclaimed that a total of 36 missiles were launched on Saturday, however many were shot down and caused no damage to their targets. Targeting the power and energy resources is part of Russia’s plan, which is to deprive Ukraine of as much power as possible going into the winter to bring the war to front-line areas. One crucial structure that Ukraine is afraid will be attacked is the Kakhovka hydropower plant. This would lead to hundreds of thousands of homes flooding. Russia has continued to deny a future attack on the hydro plant, but only time will tell if this is true or not.

Fears over Russian threat to Norway's energy infrastructure

Norway replaced Russia as the source of natural gas for Europe after sanctions were placed after the war began. Workers on the gas platform have heard unidentified drones over their heads, which could mean that Russia is trying to Cut natural gas production from Europe before the winter starts. The Norwegian government has sent warships and fighter jets to patrol to secure the gas platforms. The Problem is that it's extremely hard to secure a 9000 Km pipeline, so it could easily be targeted by Russia. The Prime minister of Norway has asked for help from their NATO allies Britain, France, and Germany to help them address the problem better as it's a very important time to maintain gas production before Winter Begins.

Boris Johnson drops out of race to return as UK’s next prime minister

After Liz Truss left her position as the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson has been the top nominee to replace her in this position. Although Johnson had spent the past week trying to gain conservative support, he has decided to drop out of the race for Prime Minister due to a divided Conservative party.

Boris exclaimed, "you can’t govern effectively unless you have a united party in Parliament", and that a general election would be too much of a distraction when the parliament needs to focus on the economic crisis spread across the country.

Johnson makes it clear that he would've had a clean sweep Conservative victory, but Sky News exclaimed how Johnson would've been bound to implode, which would be especially detrimental in the economic situation the country is facing now.

China’s Xi Claims Third Term as Communist Party Leader

 October 23, 2022

Xi Jinping received a third 5 year presidential term over China this week. Even though there are no set term limits for political figures in China, Xi is breaking with the 10 year leadership cycle set by his predecessor who served two terms as the Communist party's chief. In 2018, Xi Jinping scrapped constitutional limits that did set term limits for leaders. Xi Jinping, over his period in power, has moved China into more of an authoritarian state, gradually breaking from the idea of collective power. Instead he has concentrated more of the decision making authority among himself and his top group. The largest issues Xi Jinping made clear China wants to focus on in the future include the expansion of its military and embracing a fighting spirit for China. This could potentially be dangerous to foreign relations with other countries. Xi Jinping is also beginning to move China more towards a command economy in certain aspects as part of increasing his control. I think this will not be good for markets overall.

We heard it, we saw it, then we opened fire.

The war in Ukraine is now being fought in two mostly separate arenas: on the ground in the south and east, where the Ukrainian military has the upper hand, and in the air, where Russia is firing long-range missiles and deploying Iranian-made explosive drones to cripple electrical and heating infrastructure in Ukrainian cities in hopes of demoralizing the population. Consequently, Ukraine is developing anti-drone warfare mechanisms with specialized techniques to combat the Russian army.

Poris Johnson drops out of the race for the UK prime minister.

Former British PM announced today (Sunday) that he will not be running for office. People expected him to be replacing Liz Truss after she left office last week. Liz Truss did not have a good understanding of how the market works, and her decision to start the tax cut economic package caused a disruption in the financial markets, which caused a backlash. Sunak is most likely to be the next Prime minister of the UK as he has the support of 140 lawmakers. Boris did not have as much support as Sunak, so maybe the reason he backed out was that he eventually knew that he had a small chance of winning, so he preferred not to.

Power Outage In Ukraine

Over 1.4 million Ukrainians lost power after Russian air raids on October 23. Ukrainian General Staff reported that 40 cruise missiles and 16 allegedly Iranian-made drones hit Ukraine. The power outages may last 8-10 hours per day where electricity is still intact. This is causing major problems for the police to effectively warn citizens about airstrikes. In addition, hospitals are running on a backup generator to supply oxygen and fresh water to patients. Energy expert, Oleksandr Kharchenko, explained that there are too many power generation facilities to defend all of them.

“Pro-choice rally at Naperville’s NCC urges voters to elect state Supreme Court justices who support abortion rights”

With many parts of the world suffering from political turmoil, this article provided an interesting insight into the upcoming US midterms.  Many issues are on this ballot, like a response to this summer’s Dobbs decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.  People like those in this protest are urging voters to support human rights by electing candidates who reflect these ideals.  While this is a local perspective, it is important to look at what will happen if things like abortion get banned in the US—will people have to travel to other countries?  How will this stretch resources in bordering places, like Mexico and Canada?  How will something local, like the midterms, affect the whole world?

Protest strikes in Iran reported as solidarity rallies held around world

Shopkeepers and factory workers went on strike in Iran on Saturday. These were nation wide women-led protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini while she was in custody for violating Iran's dress code of women. This marks the sixth week of protests and rallies held in her name. Women have been protesting in Iran by "removing their headscarves, chanting anti-government slogans and confronting the security forces". These human rights protests have led to nation wide crackdowns that human rights activists say have killed at least 122 people. Protests have been taking place in universities across the country as well as in Amini's hometown where her burial spared anger and resentment in the community. In fact, protests have been held all over the world in response to Amino's death and in solidarity with the protests in Iran. The government in Iran has accused the US of using these protests to "gain concessions in talks with aimed at restoring the 2015 nuclear arms deal. At a rally in solidarity in Berlin, protesters were calling for democratic governments "to stop negotiating with the criminal state called the Islamic Republic", and Iranian human rights activities called for the explosion of Iran's ambassadors. Even though the Iranian government is saying these protests are coming to an end, it is likely that they will not for some time.

This article is about Liz Truss resigning after only 44 days of political and economic turmoil, making her tenure the shortest in British history. And how the race to be the next Prime Minister is already heating up.

UN Reports of Cocoa Crop

Cocaine production has always set a reputation for Colombia. Coca plants are considered to be the main ingredient in the production of the illegal drug cocaine. The output of these plants has increased by 43%. President Gustavo Petro has thus called the 'war on drugs a failure. Most of these drugs are distributed across Europe and the United States. The world's largest drug consumers. The production of these drugs creates numerous negative impacts on Colombia's biodiversity. Firstly, it reduces plant biodiversity and contributes to deforestation. An emerging problem in nations involved in drug production is recruiting innocent children for smuggling.  The enforcement of the war on drugs is highly questionable. in 2020, President Trump told Colombia to continue aerial spraying. President Petro's predecessor was a huge supporter of the war on drugs as well. Regardless of the efforts the problem still persists in Colombia. It affects the productivity rates of Colombia and other nations to which its drugs travel to.

Russia Shrinks Forces in Syria, a Factor in Israeli Strategy There

To reinforce the fighting in Ukraine, Putin has withdrawn important military equipment and troops from Syria. This may be an example of how the war with Ukraine is weakening the Russian presence elsewhere. Russia has always been one of the important parties in the region supporting the Syrian government. Although it still maintains many military forces, it could be a preview of what is to come. The Russian withdrawal could mean a change in the position of Israel, which is also influenced by the support that Iran is providing to Putin.

To Share or Not To Share? - Megan Lemley

As attacks are becoming more of a common occurrence in Ukraine, there is a desperate plea that is being made by Ukrainians to Israel for "air defense weapons." However, Israel is adamant on keeping their hands clean of the mess that is the Russia and Ukraine conflict as they are "on the side of the West," according to Israel's defense minister Benny Gantz.

As we have learned in class, Israel seems like they are in the right here - however, "[t]he US believes [...] drones - or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV's) - were transferred from Iran to Russia," which is a direct violation of a part of the Iran nuclear deal (specifically bans the transfer of "certain military technologies"). This bit of information is a game changer - if Iran is making an effort to back Russia and their military efforts to annex Ukraine, this will call on the United Nations, most importantly the US to step up. Will Israel take a seat at the table? Will the United States make a motion to put an end to Russian violence? Or will Russia fail to carry out their mission completely due to multiple men defecting in regards to their calls to action? These questions are important ones to pay attention to as this conflict continues to escalate.

Female Rock Climber Returns to Iran

Elnaz Rekabi who is from Iran was competing at a rock-climbing tournament but was lacking part of the necessary uniform, her hijab. She was said to be wearing a headband with her hair in a ponytail. There was a huge outburst when she did not return back to Iran after competing in public without her hijab on. Since there has been recent displays of what the morality police and anyone else in charge can do when women aren't wearing their hijab properly everyone was scared for her. After her competition on Sunday, she didn't return home until Wednesday morning. After she returned, she was talking to press and said that it wasn't her plan to compete without her hijab, she didn't know that she would be competing at that time and simply wasn't prepared. Her brother gave an interview Tuesday morning and said “My sister is a child of Iran, and she will always play wearing the national team’s uniform. Elnaz belongs to this land, and she will always play for this country,” No one knows what will happen in the next few days or if she will have any repercussions or have any trouble at all.

While Kim Jong Un Shows World ‘Fire and Fury,’ He Projects Different Message at Home

Dasl Yoon a reporter from the "Wall Street Journal" wrote an article on October 18 of this year called "While Kim Jong Un Shows World 'Fire and Fury,' He Projects Different Message at Home." In this article, the reporter talks about how Kim Jong Un focuses more on the food struggle in the propaganda instead of weapon launches. In the past years, the state media published almost every launched missile in the country but now the government is giving more priority to food insecurities which started getting worse with Covid-19 and the pandemic.  Kim knows that he has to give more importance to the food shortage because he knows the regime leader would lose the trust of the people. Further, 70% of the people would suffer from shortages and people will suffer from it. Before the pandemic, the situation was way more different because the North Koreans could buy corn cheaper, but now it increased making it more difficult for the people to afford it.  With this problem, Kim has tried to gain sympathy from his people and acknowledge economic missteps that lead to the shortage of food and he is trying to alleviate the problems this past year. However, the regime is dedicating much of its budget to military advances instead of incrementing the budget to solve the food shortage. Finally, Kim will continue to emphasize self-reliance as a way to solve the food shortage, but he will not give away his weapons for food aid.

“Flooding in Nigeria has killed more than 600 people, the government says”

With many news outlets posting solely about global powers like Russia and China, I was surprised to see that there was a climate catastrophe happening in Nigeria.  NPR has reported that “The Nigerian Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Sadiya Umar Farouq said that as of Sunday 603 people died, 2,407 people have been injured and 1.3 million people have been displaced.”  It is important to look at dangerous weather-related events like this, as well as how other countries and world powers react, especially because this is a direct correlation to climate change.  Events like these will only be exacerbated if we continue to ignore global warming, and catastrophes like this one should be getting more attention.  As for how the world powers and other actors reacted, NPR reported that “Farouq urged leaders in southern states lining the coast to evacuate people living along water channels and other areas that may block water flow,” but that many states simply did not reply, resulting in even worse devastation.  This should be a wake-up-call, not just for the climate crisis, but also for the importance of world powers supporting each other and other states.

Winter’s Approach Raises Stakes in European Energy Crisis

October 16, 2022

The Energy crisis in Europe is nearing an important point: winter. Still, Europe is as prepared as it can be for a winter with less energy. Storage facilities or gas for heating and power are almost full and consumption is down even after Moscow slashed gas deliveries in retaliation for western sanctions to Russia for their actions in Ukraine.

Even so, the article states there is 'no room for error'. Large companies producing glass and paper, in an effort to not use using gas and other needed power, have shifted to coal and oil which is detrimental to the environment. Different companies and industries have also shifted their production to avoid using any power when demand is at its peak.

If freezing weather jacks up demands, stockpiles of energy may run dry because Europe's current plan to deal with its energy situation is to keep consumption of energy low. Even though storage is full and European countries are managing the situation well given the circumstances, president Emmanuel Macron said the real test will be next winter which may be "even more difficult".

Alternative sources of energy will have to be  built upon if Europe does not want to be dependent in any way on Russian gas. Prices will rise in the short run because of the increased costs in shifting production however these investments will be good in the long term for the stability of Europe.

French People Protest Over Inflation

French people crowd the streets of Paris on Sunday, October 16, in anger over the rising prices. There were estimated to be over 140,000 people with few outbreaks of vandalism including garbage bins set on fire. The protest was for a wage increase and the fuel shortage. The gasoline shortage has left employees struggling to find ways to get to work. A lawmaker left-wing party insoumise, Christophe Bex, called the march, "a demonstration of strength." In addition, many believe the French president, Macron, is causing chaos in France. However, he stated that the conflict should be resolved by next week.

Xi Jinping's cement grip on power and zero covid policy

Once again China's most powerful leader Xi Jinping grips power.  delegates of the communist party are likely to hand Mr. Xi a third term as party chief. With Xi holding a grip on power once again, we may see several interesting policy implementations in China.  One of these policy implementations is China's zero- Covid strategy. About 2300 delegates are meeting to elect party leaders and debate key policies.  The zero covid policy has saved numerous lives. However, it has also affected the Chinese economy and created frustrations over travel restrictions among its citizens. Mr. Xi is expected to initialize the congress on Sunday using a formal speech. His leadership in China possesses the three most powerful roles in China. These roles include the General Secretary of the CCP, chairman of the country's armed forces, and president. CCP in china does not set any term limits. This allows Xi to remain president for as long as he likes. This begs the question of whether China is transitioning into an authoritarian state.

UN Report finds that China may have committed human rights violations against Uyghur Muslims

China may have committed "crimes against humanity" in Xinjiang, UN report finds

A report was released by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights that said that China committed human rights violations against Uyghur Muslims. China has denied committing human rights violations and made a response to it saying that the report was disinformation from anti-China forces. China has detained Uyghur Muslims and may have committed other acts such as torture, drugging, sexual abuse, restrictions of freedom of religious expression, and restrictions on reproductive rights. China claims that it is fighting terrorism and that Xinjiang is enjoying social stability.

After North Korea Fires Missiles, Flies Aircraft, South Imposes Sanctions

South Korea announced its first sanctions against North Korea in five years in response to recent missile launches by the Kim Jong-un regime. The punishment of the South consisted in blacklisting 15 North Korean individuals and 16 instituitons involved in missile development.

Consequently, we must not forget the background of the situation: the announcement of these sanctions comes after North Korea launched a short-range ballistic missile on Thursday and conducted air drills near the inter-Korean border, where it also fired hundreds of artillery rounds.

Young Boy is Saved After Destructive Missile Strikes in Southern Ukraine - Megan Lemley

This morning a young boy was found underneath the rubble of a Russian attack on a Ukrainian residence building. A glimmer of light in such a gloomy atmosphere failed to bring hope to Ukrainians, but also the world. There are many questions that ring through my mind as a reader: Who is this boy? Where are his parents? Were they killed in this attack? Another thought that crosses my mind is the pure disregard that Russia has for human life - it is now said that they are using imprecise attacks with missiles that are meant for space - of which they haphazardly release on a general target. According to this article, they continue to target non-military structures like energy facilities and even a children's playground. It is still to be seen what Russia won't sacrifice in the name of war.

This article discusses the things that Biden's National Security Strategy has been focusing on since it was released last winter as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, arguing that the source of US strength will come from a reaffirmation of the nation's democratic traditions. However, it comes at a crucial stage in superpower conflict, as China rises and seeks to rewrite the rules of commerce, surveillance, and influence over other countries, while Russia seeks to redraw national borders. And with the recent developments that they have made, such as the islands when it comes to china and the Russian invasion for soverign land which are both situations that we discussed in class. It demonstrates that the United States is focused on maintaining its position as a global power. It also demonstrates how our unipolar system is beginning to devolve into a bipolar system, and we are doing everything we can to prevent this from happening.

’Ghost town’: Japan reopens borders, but visitors find short-staffed hotels and closed up shops

Japan is fully re-opening to tourists this week after two years of pandemic-related restrictions. Japan had some of the strictest border control policies in place to slow the spread of Covid in the country. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is "counting on tourism to help invigorate the economy" (Symons).  However, there is a lack of hospitality workers in the industry, and many businesses and tourist destinations were greatly effected. This is making it hard for tourism to come back to the country. So far, only about half a million tourists have visited Japan this year (Symons). Shops in Narita Airport, Japan's largest international airport, are remaining closed and will likely not open until next year at the earliest. People have described the airport as a "ghost town" (Symons). Additionally, in August almost 73% of hotels across the nation have reported they are short of regular workers. And Japan is requiring overseas travelers to wear masks while they are there which is another deterrent for tourists. Hotels can also refuse guests who do not obey with safety guidelines. It may be years before Japan's tourism scene is back up and running.

Iran Oil Workers Strike as Antigovernment Protests Expand

David S. Cloud reporter from the "Wall Street Journal" wrote an article on October 10 of this year called "Iran Oil Workers Strike as Antigovernment Protest Expand." In this article, the reporter talks about how the unrest spread to the oil industry when the workers at a petrochemical complex in southern Iran went on strike on Monday and how the UK government put more sanctions on security officials for alleged human rights violations. This week the workers joined the protest by blocking roads and protesting at a plant in Assaluyeh in the oil-rich province of Bushehr on the Persian Gulf. This demonstration marked the first time the unrest had spread outside retail outlets and small businesses. Further, the government has been even more hashed to the Kurdish population after the protest began. So the UK government has responded by imposing sanctions on senior Iranian security officers for alleged human rights violations. These sanctions include banning Gholamreza Soleimani, head of Iran Basij Force, and Hassan Karami, commander of a police special forces unit from entering the UK and freezing their assets in the country. Finally, the Uk government is imposing sanctions to send a clear message to the Iranian authorities that they would be held accountable for their actions and there would be consequences for their actions.

Putin’s Apocalyptic End Game in Ukraine

In the article ,Putins Apocalyptic End Game in Ukraine the author discusses how Putins initial war in Ukraine was an offensive war, an attempt to take over Ukraine and make it part of Russia. Instead what happened was Russia went on the defensive having to leave certain taken regions of Ukraine and defend Russian border. The article discussed possible ways the war can end one being Ukraine giving up regions of Ukraine to Russia, another being nuclear war, and another being Total war. only the first one would be in the whole worlds best interest in avoiding total global annihilation or all out global war. Avoiding war would be in putins interest of survival for his state clearly being shown that Russia is not capable of sustaining a ground or ariel war. This will be interesting and tense to follow in the coming time and will be interesting to see how Russia responds to the defensive shift.

Strong Dollar Pressures U.S. Manufacturing Rebound

Strong Dollar Pressures U.S. Manufacturing Rebound

10/09/2022

The dollar has been strengthening recently but this could cause some trouble for U.S. manufacturing since all products from the U.S. are more expensive to other countries. This is because the dollar is so high compared to other currencies around the world. Foreign companies are gaining a price advantage because their goods have become cheaper to people with U.S. dollars due to the stronger dollar. The stronger dollar is making imports cheaper but exports more expensive for the U.S. However, some say that the period of the strong dollar will end soon because the U.S. had a high trade deficit of 1.1 trillion in the first half of 2022 compared to 790 billion during 'the same period in 2021'. This will make the dollar unattractive to investors. As inflation slows, interest rates should fall again which will also help decrease the value of the dollar to a more normal level.

Putin accuses Ukraine of terrorism

Vladimir Putin has just claimed that Ukraine has performed an act of terrorism after a bridge leading to Crimea, which Russia annexed. The explosions killed three people in a nearby car. Putin claims that this act was considered an act of terrorism due to how important Crimea is to the Russian civil infrastructure. This bridge, known as the Kerch Strait Bridge, directly connects Russia to Crimea, and the destruction of this bridge creates problems for travel between the two states. It is likely that this anger is mainly due to the fact that one of the significant uses of this bridge is the transportation of Russian military equipment, ammunition, and soldiers. Russian official Alexander Bastrykin claims that there is evidence that the attack was carried out by Russian citizens, likely with help from some other states. The truck that was blown up had reportedly been traveling through Bulgaria, Georgia, Armenia, North Ossetia, and Krasnodar Territory prior to the attack. Putin has been reported saying "only one terrorist state here" and that the "whole world knows who it is". These are clearly directed at Ukraine. Since the attack, the bridge has been worked on and is now partially functional.

“Hong Kong detains first teenagers under national security law”

I chose this article because it reminded me of the China documentary that we watched a little bit ago.  In this video, we saw a communist dictatorship controlling the central government in all areas of China, except for Hong Kong.  Here, people, especially young people, are rebelling and fighting for their rights as an independent state rather than part of China.  Over the weekend, five teenagers, members of “Returning Valiant” (a pro-Hong Kong independence group), were arrested and sentenced to three years of detention for advocating against the Beijing government.  These teenagers ranged from 16-19 years old, and it was the first time that national law has been used against non-adults for security law purposes.  This is definitely something to keep an eye on because, as China establishes itself as a global superpower that rivals the US, their actions towards protestors, governments, and policing will be vital in how they want to appear to the world, as well as how they want the rest of the world to work.

Russian draft dodgers pour into Kazakhstan to escape Putin’s war

Vadim says he plunged into depression last month after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military draft to send hundreds of thousands of conscripts to fight in Ukraine.

When Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in February, Vadim says he took to the streets of Moscow to protest – but Putin’s September 21 order to draft at least 300,000 men to fight felt like a point of no return.
