Photographer Pieter Hugo Captures Portraits of Forgiveness 20 Years After Genocide in Rwanda

In remembrance of the genocide in Rwanda twenty years ago, photographer Pieter Hugo has captured a series of photographs of Hutu perpetrators side-by-side with their Tutsi victims. Each photo portrays a victim the perpetrator who has been granted pardon for their crimes by the victim. The series is in association with the non-profit organization AMI or the Association Modeste et Innocent. This organization works with a group of Hutus and Tutsis, counseling them over many months and ending with the perpetrator's formal request for forgiveness. While the relationships between the perpetrators and the victims are different in each pair and the photos often show little evident warmth between the two, each photo also conveys one undeniable characteristic: forgiveness. The photos were commissioned by Creative Court as part of their "Rwanda 20 Years" program, focusing on forgiveness. Many of the victims photographed spoke of their ability to forgive their perpetrators as an important step to improving their lives.
