Chinese Purchases of U.S. Media Have Some in Congress Raising Eyebrows

16 members of Congress have urged the Government Accountability Office to review the "effectiveness" of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). In a letter, they called for "greater scrutiny of Chinese corporate purchases, including movie theaters and studios". The rate and quantity of which the Chinese are acquiring movie theaters and studios is creating a bit of a geopolitical conflict, and raising many questions. The main concern of the members of Congress “Should the definition of national security be broadened to address concerns about propaganda and control of the media and ‘soft power’ institutions?” Also the major Chinese purchasing company, WANDA, seems to have many investors with ties to the Communist Party, which is worrisome as well.
