Afghan Gov't At Risk of 'Implosion'

The International Crisis Group is warning that the fragile government in Kabul, already mired in a state of chaos, may completely collapse as early as 2014. The fast-approaching date outlined by the Belgian think-tank is not arbitrary; by then, UN troops will have completed their withdrawal, and a presidential election also looms. On the heels of fraudulent presidential and parliamentary elections in 2009 and 2010, Afghanistan finds itself at the precipice of disaster. Another place Afghanistan can be found is at the top of numerous "failed state" indices, thanks in large part to incessant violence that has increasingly been directed towards police. Economic troubles hang like an albatross around the nation's neck. 2014, once a looked-forward-to date within Afghanistan, is increasingly being viewed with angst.
