Having earned the right to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games, Brazilian authorities have accelerated efforts to clean Rio's drug-infested favelas. The most recent bolstering brings the number of agents patrolling the streets just shy of 7,000. Raids occurred early Sunday morning and involved 800 agents in riot gear. Ahead of international showcases for the city, the crime-ridden neighborhoods are at risk of entering the spotlight. Similar to Beijing's pollution issues of 2008, Rio is attempting to diminish the significance of its least admirable aspects. Whether the recent momentum is a superficial, temporary band-aid or an honest, long-term solution remains to be seen.
