Catalonia Continues Down the Road to Independence

Spain has major financial problems right now and an unemployment rate of over 25%. Spain has tightened up the belt in all of its 17 regions, including Catalonia in order to try to save money. Catalonia and several other regions have asked Madrid for bailouts in order to stabilize and save their economies from hitting rock bottom. Spain barely has enough money to run the national government let alone help bailout these regions. At the Barcelona-Madrid soccer game, thousands of fans from Barcelona chanted "Independence!". This large display of nationalism is causing a major stir between Madrid and Catalonia's major city Barcelona. For centuries, Catalonians have sought independence from Spain but never have had any success. However, with this financial crisis going on, Catalonians are becoming more and more agitated with Spain and their drive to obtain independence is growing. The separatist movement is pushing the president of Catalonia to consider a plebiscite in order to give Catalonians the chance to vote for independence from Spain. The problem with this is that technically that would be illegal because in Spain's constitution, only the central government can call for a plebiscite.
