Hope of Finding Survivors of Afghan Mudslide Fades

On Friday,  a succession of mudslides in the remote region of Abi-Barak, Afghanistan entombed as many as 2,500 people. The mud covered the huts of the village, quickly hardening an leaving a cement-like barrier between the survivors and the people trapped beneath the mud. Many of those killed by the initial slide were believeved to be women and children who were at home while the men were away from the house working. The U.N. has offered assistance to the survivors, providing them with food and water, as well as a U.S.-led military coalition providing them with blankets, carpets, and tents. The people of the community said that they are appreciative for the help but are focused on rebuilding their community, as the damage from the slide has obstructed a creek from which they get their fresh water, while also battling the fear of being struck by another landslide.
