Ukraine Stuggles to Gain Resource Independancy

As the ongoing crisis between Russia and neighboring country Ukraine continues to escalate and gain a wider global audience, there lies an equally large issue in how the country provides its people with power. Russian energy company Gazprom supplies roughly a third of the European Union with natural gas, as well as dominating the domestic energy business in Russia. Ukraine, already under heavy influence from Russia due to a large portion of their population being pro-Russian, sees the underground gas pipelines as well as their dependency on said energy as a potential means to blunt some of Russia's power over them. Along with rising tensions on the ground, the problems underground have been a key talking point in the continuing battle in eastern Europe.
