Safety for Children in the US Increasing

Chandler Olah

Major events seen on the news involving children tend to be negative, especially in the past few years with school shootings such as Columbine. However, life has actually gotten a lot safer for American children, according to a new study. "Researchers compared rates of 50 different types of violence and crime over time. Of those categories, 27 saw significant declines between 2003 and 2011."  Children tend to be victimized more than adults and often witness more violent acts than any others. "This study confirms what we have noticed from a variety of other sources that children's safety has improved since 2003," said Finkelhor, director of the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire. This evidence follows the trend that overall violence, throughout the world, is decreasing. Experts are unsure why.
