Merkel and Hollande Send
Russia a Warning
President Francois
Hollande of France was invited by Chancellor Angela Merkel to Stralsund,
Germany which is a big deal since she invites only the most select of visitors.
Both made a joint statement that warned Russia that if they did not help defuse
the crisis in Ukraine, it would face tough sanctions. They want to see “visible
steps” to pull out troops from Ukraine’s border. Putin said that he had already
pulled out troops, but NATO and Western leaders never saw any evidence of the
withdrawl. They also agreed that Ukraine’s presidential election must be
allowed to proceed freely and fairly. There are differences between the two
economies of the countries’ with Germany’s economic success and France’s unemployment.
The two countries working together could move Europe to a European energy
union. This unity will help make Europe strong.
