U.S. Urges Congo Leader Not to Run for Third Term

The Democratic Republic of Congo had an election in 2006, after the assassination of the former president. This election was described as fair and was a good step for their democratic government. But in 2011, the current president Joseph Kabila, won an election that was seen as flawed and unfair. He has been allowed to continue with his role, but Secretary of State John Kerry is now urging him to abided by the constitution and not run for reelection. There have been rumors that he would change the constitution to allow him to run for president again. Kerry and the United States believe that it would be a step in the wrong direction if he is allowed to do this. So much so that they have offered 30 million dollars for the next election.
