On Friday, after Catalonia announced its independence Spain quickly reacted and dissolved Catalonia's president Puigdemont and cabinet. The Senate in Spain granted the Madrid government the powers to do so only hours after the decision for independence was announced. Spanish prime minister Rajoy, who sees the declaration as a threat to legality and democracy, called for new elections to be held in Catalonia which will take place Dec. 21. Rajoy seeks to get the separatists under control and crush any future plans of Catalonia's independence. Rajoy pledged, "we will not allow some people to blow up our constitution." Puigdemont, the Catalonian president, urges his supporters to stay strong during this time of strife and remain peaceful and dignified. However, that may be difficult seeing as since the announcement of Catalonia's independence France, Germany, Britain, and the U.S. said that they will not recognize Catalonia as an independent nation.
