Japan's prime minister, Shinzo Abe, boasts about his landslide victory and how he intends to use this new mandate to defend Japan against North Korea, hopefully through diplomatic channels. However, he does make strong references to the fact that he will pursue ways for his country to defend itself against North Korea, militarily if necessary. This is a double edge sword for the United States. If we were to go to war with North Korea, Japan would be a great ally. However, the idea that Japan could drag us into a Korean war prematurely is also a real concern because this change in Japan's policy may make it harder for the US to negotiate with North Korea. I do believe that post World War II Japan will remain a close ally of the United States no matter what new policy Prime Minister Abe sets.
