Today CNN reported that on Putin's 65th birthday a mass protest was held and that the police arrested 290 people in 26 different cities. The protests are said to be held by supporters of Putin's political rival Alexei Navalny, who is currently in jail for organizing the unauthorized meeting. As of now, it is impossible to organize legal protests in Russia because of the laws in 2012 that tighten the ability of public assembly. Navalny wants to run for president but cannot because of the embezzlement conviction against him which he claims were bogus and meant to block his bid. The protesters were calling for the Putin's retirement and for the release of Navalny. People in Russia are fed up with a lack of freedom of speech and strict censorship and this will give way to serious change in Russia's politics.
