Theresa May's spokesman at Downing Street said the UK will not recognize Catalonia's declaration of independence, because the vote in question was declared illegal. The Scottish government said it "understood and respected" Catalonia's position, but it did not openly contradict London, and called for the EU to resolve the crisis peacefully.
The Catalan regional parliament declared independence 70-10, though the opposition boycotted the vote. The Spanish Parliament has approved direct rule of Catalonia in response. The UK spokesman said the UK "will not recognize the unilateral declaration made by the Catalan regional parliament. It was made based on a vote that was declared illegal in Spanish courts. We want to see the Spanish Constitution respected, and Spanish unity preserved."
Hopefully the crisis can be dealt with peacefully and an agreement made that will benefit both Spain and Catalonia, but Spain may have to gear up for its first war in a long time. We'll see how this plays out in the coming weeks.
