“Isis Fighters,
Having Pledged to Fight or Die, Surrender en Masse”
In Dibis, Iraq- Thousands of Isis fighters are surrendering to
Kurdish officials from their Iraqi stronghold in Hawija Iraq. The Kurdish
officials said, “they put up no fight at all, other than planting bombs and
bobby traps”. This a result of Isis’s fight for control of Mosul, Iraq’s second
largest city. The Kurds suspect that the Islamic state is crumbling, since it
is not normal for a group of Isis militants who are trained to kill, to
surrender. While under Kurdish control, the Isis militants were stripped of
their shoes and belts and restrained for integration. The Islamic state wali (governor)
told Isis militants to turn themselves in. Mr. Mohemin, a surrendered Islamic
militant provided information on the current standing of the Islamic state, “If
the governors are telling us to surrender, it really means that this is the end”.
The Kurds have a history of killing Isis militants, which is why the surrendering
of Isis fighters doesn’t bode well for the future of the Islamic state. Whether
the Kurdish and Iraqi forces can maintain control of Mosul remains to be seen.
