I feel that in Spain there is a wide gap between rich
and poor and Catalonia represents a lot of the wealth in the country. Because
of this, it is easy-to-understand why this otherwise geographically unimportant
section of Spain has become such a flash point for Spain. However I think it is
very concerning that Spain is somewhat trying to repress its people. Being American, I certainly can understand where
the Spanish government is coming from. Secession is not allowed in Spain,
similarly it is not allowed in many countries. America fought one of its most
bloody wars over this simple idea. The Civil War after all was fought in the
South. The South wanted to secede from the union. I don't have an opinion on
whether or not Catalonia should be allowed to secede. However I do see the
problem for Spain if it allows Catalonia to secede, it sets a dangerous
precedent for the remaining areas of Spain as well as Europe as a whole.
