FEMA director: 'We filtered out' San Juan mayor 'a long time ago'

The director of FEMA said in a statement on Sunday that the comments of San Juan's mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz, were being "filtered out" in response to the back and forth battling between the mayor and Donald Trump. Brock Long, the FEMA administrator said that the agency was working with the governor of Puerto Rico, and that they would not let the battle of politics get in the way of their progress and aid.

On one hand I think that this is a smart tactic because the news coverage surrounding Puerto Rico has been largely about the battle between Cruz and Trump. More attention and media coverage needs to be based on the people of Puerto Rico and the aid that still desperately needs to be provided to millions of Puerto Ricans.

On the other hand however, much of the battle that Cruz is trying win is getting the media, and especially the president, to pay attention to the Puerto Rican crisis, and to move aid and resources faster than what is happening currently.

Personally, I think that a lot still needs to be done in Puerto Rico. With Hurricane Nate blowing in soon, FEMA is going to have a lot of people on the ground around the nation trying to rehabilitate American citizens. I desperately hope that Puerto Rico does not get neglected and left behind. I hope that Puerto Ricans do not have repercussions based on the negative political press that the country's leaders may be receiving.
