Portugal Catholic Church Child Sexual Abuse Scandal

Almost 5,000 individuals may be victims of child sexual abuse at a Portugal Catholic Church. This number was estimated by a psychiatrist who is heading the panel on the investigation of these crimes. 512 possible victims have come forward, but the church claims only a handful have actually happened. Clergymen sat and listened to the details of each case be read out with vivid descriptions. An expert panel is beginning to look into each of these cases and the history of abuse in the church. A committee called The Independent Committee for the Study of Child Abuse in the Catholic Church was set up last year to investigate child abuse accusations from 1950 to currently. The Church is keeping all of the victim's and clergymen accused names private for now, but the police and bishops are receiving a list of clergymen accused who are still active in the Church. The Portugal Catholic Church has not yet released if they will pay the victims compensation.
