Attack at Nigerian College Leaves many Dead

Early Tuesday, assailants killed at least twenty-five people at a college in northeastern Nigeria.  This overnight attack took place at the Federal Polytechnic Mubi in Adamawa State.  A witness said, "Some were shot, others were killed with machetes."  It was also reported that individuals were questioned before being attacked.  The motives and direct causes of the killings have been mixed.  Some believe it was caused by a campus election that took place the previous Saturday that was "bitterly contested along religious and ethnic lines."  Others believe that the Islamist sect Boko Haram were responsible because of the amount of Boko Haram-related violence in the last year.  The Boko Haram sect have also targeted politicians, security forces, and students in the past.  As student halls were raided by police after the massacre, they recovered weapons, grenades, and knives.  Several fraternities have been using gang violence to exercise their power so the motivation by political feud is possible as well.
