A bomb was planted in western Baghdad in the al-Amriya neighborhood. The bomb was planted in a three-story building, housing a ice cream parlor, medical offices, and a coffee shop. The bomb detonated at approximately 10:00pm (GMT) on Thursday. There were 27 casualties, including four children, as well as another 51 people injured. This neighborhood is predominantly Sunni Muslims. It is believed that this attack is related to a series of attacks preceding the provincial elections on Saturday. There are significant levels of concern about this election, because many individuals may not vote due to a fear of polling stations coming under attack. U.N. Official Martin Kobler is calling for heightened security in order to allow a safe environment for the election as well as calling for Iraqis to vote. He is calling it their patriotic duty to make their voices heard.
