In numerous locations in Iraq, protests by Sunni's against the government and Prime minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki have left dozens dead and hundreds more injured. Although the violence has declined since 2007, the prevalence of the civil war in Syria has spilled over into Iraq. Both the Iraqi government and Iraqi militant tribes have pitted their stake in the war, with the government allowing the Syrian (shiite) government to transport weapons through Iraq, and the local manifestation of a violent Syrian Sunni group in Iraq. Many of the participants of simple sit-ins have taken up arms in an effort to retaliate for the deaths of the other protestors.
