An Indian woman,Savita Halappanavar, living in Ireland with her husband passed away due to an infection in her blood due to a miscarriage. Savita was 17 weeks pregnant when she miscarried and the infection afterwards lead to her death. She had complained of back pain a few days before and went into the doctor, but was told she cannot receive an abortion because "Ireland is a Catholic country", though the doctor denies saying this. The doctors say they were not aware at the time that there were blood abnormalities between the fetus and the mother, although that information may not have made such a difference because one of the doctors said that that is still not enough proof for eminent danger to the mother's life. Experts in the coroner's office have determined that if the fetus had been aborted just a few days sooner, Savita's life could have been saved. All of this is interesting since we were just talking about the divide of Protestant and Catholic religions in Ireland and how the religion truly rules the state.
