A Turkey-Israel Opening

During a recent trip to Israel, President Obama helped form a potential positive relationship between Israel and Turkey, which has not existed since an incident during the 1990s.  On March 22, under President Obama's orchestration, the Israeli Prime Minister, Netanyahu, called his Turkish counterpart, Erdogan, to apologize for the loss of life involved in the Mavi Marmara incident.  This gesture opened the possibility of repairing relations between these countries.  However, both countries will need to work hard to repair the deep fissure between their two countries.  As time has progressed, Israeli and Turkish politics have moved in opposing directions.  A lasting relationship between the two countries will likely rely on three pillars:  containment of the Syrian conflict, economic links, and the creation of a regional forum to discuss concerns of Eiddle Eastern countries.
