A landslide in the northeastern region of Afghanistan is believed to have cause over 2,500 people to go missing, making it one of the worst to hit the area in years. The landslide occurred as the region experienced a surge of rainfall in recent weeks. Shah Waliullah Adeeb, the governor of Badakhshan believes that it would be humanly impossible to remove all of the dead bodies from the area. Local villages and the Army have begun providing aid to the area under the direction of Hamid Karzai. The UN suggested that there were enough aid resources already in the area, but suggested that they would be willing to help if more aid was needed. Mark Bowden, the head of the United Nations humanitarian coordinator in Afghanistan said that there has been more casualties due to natural disasters in the last 7 days than there have been in all of 2013.
