Catalan referendum: Catalonia has 'won right to statehood'

The BBC News reported on the Catalans who held a vote today on whether or not they should declare their independence from Spain.  Catalan officials say over 90 percent of the vote was in favor of independence however Spain has declared the vote illegal.  They also blocked Catalans from voting and raided many polling stations.  There was a great deal of violence and civil unrest and more than 800 people have been injured across the region.  Catalan officials hope that the European Union will now take notice of their plight and assist them in their attempt to become independent.
