This article talks about the repercussions that several people from the Turkish military are facing over trying to assassinate President Erdogan during a military coup in Turkey, in 2016. They are also being tried because they atempted to capture the parliament building and overthrow the government. Many of the people that support the Turkish President are calling for the prosecuted persons to be given the death penalty, however, the death penalty was outlawed in 2004. The reason being that Turkey was attempting to become part of the European Union. However, after the failed coup, President Erdogan is trying to reinstate the death penalty. The government is blaming the coup on exiled cleric Fetullah Gulen (he lives in the United States now), they have also arrested people that associate with Mr. Gulen. The government is saying that the Gulen Movement, is now considered a terrorist organization. Since this failed coup, the Turkish government has arrested thousands, as well as, purging those who are accused of opposing the state and shutting down the media.
