Iranian Chess Player, Shunned for Refusing to Wear Hijab, Will Play in U.S.

On October 03, 2017 it was reported that a female chess player from Iran was banned from laying chess for the Iranian team in the World Federation League.  She refused to wear a hijab, which is required to be worn by all females in Iran.  She found out through friends that the Iranian team had banned her from playing weeks after the tournament in which she did not wear a hijab.  Ms. Derakhshani moved to the United States in July to continue her playing, American officials explained that there is no requirements of any kind to play chess.  At this time there was no indication of weather there would be any backlash politically from the U.S. allowing her to play on the American team.
