Expansion of Nuclear Power in Iran

April 9 has been deemed by Iran's president - Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - as National Nuclear Technology Day for the past several years. Today, in a ceremony to mark this day, he announced that Iran is expanding its uranium production and other atomic advances. Specifically, he claims that Iran has opened two uranium extraction mines in the central region of Iran known as Yazd as well as another factory to process semi-refined uranium, known as yellowcake, into other nuclear fuels. Ahmadinejad is reported to have said that, “the best way for you is to cooperate with Iran" and is concerned that other world leaders do not consider Iran to be a nuclear power when they should. Although this article is written with quite a skeptical tone as to the verity of Ahmadinejad's statements, the author does not provide any evidence to indicate that Iran's president is making false claims.
