Syrian Civil War Affects Lebanon

There has been a civil war occuring in Syria for the past two years, which is now "rolling into" Lebanon. There government collapsed after the prime minister resigned this past Saturday. Lebanon has tension within its borders between the Shiite and the Sunni people. The Shiites favor the Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran, and support the governmental forces in Syria while the Sunni, backed by Saudi Arabia, are generally aiding the Syrian rebel forces. The sectarian divide manifested in negative ways after the assassination of Brigadier Gen. Wissam al Hassan, the Lebanese intelligence chief and prominent figure in the Sunni political group. There has been a significant amount of violence and death in Syria and is carrying into Lebanon. The new prime minister is focusing on disassociating Lebanon from the conflict and aims to form a cabinet with representatives from across the political spectrum.
