This week, Caroline Kennedy, ambassador to Japan, made a visit to Okinawa and many assumed she would be discussing the relocation of a U.S. military base. The Japanese people, many of whom oppose the move, were very hopeful that Kennedy would listen and act accordingly to their complaints. However, much of her visit focused on strengthening education and cultural ties. Only briefly did she mention that it would be important to reduce American military presence in Japan. Despite opposition coming from the Japanese people President Abe is still planning to move forward with the relocation plan. With China growing in power Abe is feels the need to assert Japan's power, but can only do so with U.S. backing.
