On Saturday, February 8th, Princess Cristina of
Spain testified in court in regards to a scandal revolving the Spanish royal family.
Her husband, Inaki Urdgangarin, was head of a charity organization called the
Noos Foundation, in which its purpose was to hold government contracts to stage
sports and tourism events. However, in the midst of the financial crisis in Europe,
both the princess and her husband are charged with embezzling part of the funds
that were received by the foundation. Princess Cristina was initially charged
last April, but the charges were dropped during sometime in May due to the
fact that prosecutors wanted to appeal to a provincial court for lack of
efficient evidence. During January of this year, Judge Castro, whom initially
charged the princess in April, gave a 227-page order to once again charge her
on tax fraud and “money laundering from a separate company.” An official from
the royal household stated that the princess wanted to testify in court to
prove to everyone in Spain that she has nothing to hide and prove her innocence. As a result of
Princess Cristina testifying in court, the European Commission took a survey in
which it states that 95% of the Spaniards feel that there is rampant corruption
in the country.
