Hour by hour, even minute by minute, the plot in Ukraine thickens. Today (Saturday, Feb. 22nd), was an epochal day in the revolution. Ukrainian parliament voted out President Yanukovich, who has fled the the capital city of Kiev. The embattled president released a video today from northeastern Ukraine in which he compared the protestors to Nazis. Yanukovich has been retreating since November after seeking friendship in Russia rather than the European Union. Members of the "Punch" party, led by former heavyweight boxing champion and presidential candidate Vitaly Klitschko, submitted the resolution in parliament.
While dozens of people are dying daily in the streets of Kiev, on Saturday former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko was freed from prison, where she had been sentenced to seven years for embezzlement and abuse of power. This is seen as another massive victory for opposition, for whom Tymoshenko has been a source of inspiration. The international community continues to watch with interest as Ukraine burns, but will the West intervene? Better yet, will Russia intervene?
