Authorities captured notorious drug lord and Sinaloa cartel boss, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, Saturday in Mazatlan, Mexico. With pending cases concerning Guzman and his crews indictments for marijuana, cocaine, heroin trafficking, racketeering, money laundering, and kidnapping/conspiring to murder in New York and other U.S. jurisdictions, Guzman may be extradited to be tried in America. Chicago's crime commission had even named Guzman it's Public Enemy Number 1 last year. However, CNN analysts believe that Mexico will want to hold the trials and keep him in Mexico. According to CNN law enforcement analyst Tom Fuentes, Guzman is "considered one of the richest men in the world and the Sinaloa cartel is one of the most prolific drug-trafficking organization in the world." Having been responsible for thousands of deaths, Fuentes believes Mexico will want to take the first shot at Guzman.
Guzman escaped a Mexican prison in 2001 and has avoided authorities using his vast power to corrupt local, state, and federal officials. Phil Jordan, who spent three decades with the DEA and headed their El Paso Intelligence Center, believes that extraditing Guzman to the United States would be the only way to "truly cripple his organization". No extradition request has yet to made however.
