The massacre at Garissa University College in Kenya left 142 students dead. The four militants who murdered these students were from an organization known as Shabab based in neighboring Somalia. This Muslim extremist group sent the four militants to kill any and all Christian students, sparing the Muslim students. Families of the deceased are left to pick of the pieces of their shattered lives. The following article talks of the aftermath of the massacre.
Although the death toll was much higher at Garissa University College, it is unfortunately not unheard of for mass shootings at universities to occur. They have happened in the United States at multiple grade levels. Recently there was the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. These shootings often lead to discussions of gun control and treating mental illness. However, the massacre at Garissa University College was not the action of one extraordinarily misguided individual. It was a terrorist attack. This should spark a conversation about international security as well as cooperation. We should be asking questions like, "How can we support Kenya?" and "Is there anything we can do to help Somalia gain peace?" Let's make an effort to make the world more peaceful.
