Millions of dollars in World War II silver recovered from deep ocean

Adam Winters

In November of 1942, the SS City of Cairo was sunken by a German U boat.  The boat had 296 civilians on it and 100 tons of silver.  After the sinking, many of the survivors made it to the life boats but it took 51 days to reach land, leaving only two people alive.  After seven decades, the boat has finally been recovered and with it the lost silver.  A hundred tons of silver today is at least 50 million dollars and a percentage of the money was given to the Deep Ocean Search Company and the rest went to the UK treasury.  Since the boat was 16,800 feet under water in the Atlantic, the Deep Ocean Search Company claimed that this was a world record dive.
