The Serbian Prime Minister Aleksander Vucic has publicly stated that he is willing to negotiate with his Kosovar counterpart over "normalizing"the relations between the two. Though he stated that Serbia will not recognize Kosovo as a separate independent state, as they feel that Kosovo is still a Serbian territory. Much of the international community sees Kosovo as an independent state and Serbia's recognition of Kosovo is seen by many to be something that would push them into the European Union. The territories have had a long history with being tied together officially since 1346 CE under the Serbian Empire. Enduring Ottoman rule for 500 years together and staying tied in the Yugoslavian republic for nearly 100 more, the two have an integral history with one another including much violence. Recently the dispute has manifested itself in the sporting arena in a soccer match between Serbia and Albania in which Albanian politicians flew a banner overhead during the match with a picture of the Kosovar state that caused a violent uproar in the Belgrade stadium. Though many conservative ethnic Serbs may object, the recognition of Kosovo is important if Serbia truly wishes to be accepted in the European Union.
